Timeless Crimea in an Emotional Music Video

Soviet nostalgia and complex reality caught on film.

Filmmaker Alexey Kurbatov first heard the song “Young Waves” by now defunct Siberian group Curd Lake in 2011. “I was sure that someone would make a music video for it, which would be personal and innocent,” says Alexey. “But nobody did and after three years, my friend Sasha Pavlov and I decided to shoot such a video ourselves.”

The piece combines a romantic and nostalgia-infused vision of Crimea as tourists’ paradise with disturbing signs of the modern post-Soviet reality. The result is a meditative yet conflicting impression, shot on 8mm Kodak film.
